Reported by:

  • Marta Duenas Diez (ISA Student Section Valladolid, student member)

Objective:

The main objective of the seminar was to present the student sections of Catania and Valladolid, and their activities, and to enhance future collaboration among them.

Presentation of ISA Student Section - Catania (Italy).

The two students and the advisor from Catania's ISA Student Section gave a presentation about their section with focus on the main activities. Some of their main activities last year included the following: Student Contest. An exhibition was arranged at the University of Catania by the ISA Student Section and the IEEE Student Section, where the students could show their work in the field of Instrumentation, Systems and Automation. Many students participated with poster presentations, labs and interactive demos.

ISA Student Games. Three students from Catania and one from St. Petesburg were the members of the team representing Europe in the Student Games arranged during ISA 2002 Conference, Training and Exhibition held in Chicago in October 2002.

Outdoor activities. Some outdoor activities are arranged by the student section regularly to promote teamwork and communication among the member students.

EuroXchange. Students have participated with articles in previous number of the EuroXchange journal.

Orazio Mirabella and the students said also some words about the background of the members of the student section. Most of the members have background in Computer Engineering.

Presentation of ISA Student Section - Valladolid (Spain).

The two students and the advisor from Valladolid's ISA student Section presented the activities of their local section. Valladolid is the youngest of the European student sections, and their main activities have been so far: ISA Spain student prize. ISA Spain arrange a contest every year to reward the best student work in the field of Instrumentation, Systems and Automation.

Courses. The student section arranges periodically courses on different aspects of instrumentation, systems and automation, that are of interest for the students, and that are not otherwise available to them. Student members pay a reduced fee for these courses. This has proved to be a good way to attract members.

Visits to factories. The section arranges visits to industry factories. Students enjoy these visits.

EuroXchange. Students have participated with articles in previous number of the EuroXchange journal.

Jesus M. Zamarreno and the students said also some words about the background of the members of the student section. Most of the members have background in Chemical Engineering, but there are also students from industrial engineering, physics, computer engineering and other technical titulations. One of the students (Marta Duenas) gave a short presentation entitled "Mechanistic modelling and nonlinear control of particulate processes", to show the type of background students from the section in Valladolid have.

Discussion:

The seminar continued with a short discussion about future collaboration of both sections. Some of the suggestions included: student exchange between the two sections, as the exchange the Catania Section and St.-Petersburg section did last year; possibility for one or several students from the Valladolid section to participate in the team that may represent Europe's District in future editions of the ISA Student Games.
